© Giancarlo Mecarelli
Zoom International #65
Giancarlo Mecarelli's photos have always
had a playful aspect to them. Starting in the Nineties, his most
well-known series, for example, were based on the unusual pairing
of objects and accessories which, worn by or placed next to the
models in his photos, gave rise to direct, stylized and highly
creative images. Realizing them required a high level of precision
in creating and managing the photographic set, including the
background and lighting, because in that period everything was done
using analog technology.
This tremendous ability to synthesize and capture unusual or
hidden connections within reality is a natural gift. It is
"fantasy", it is the idea that is born inside us, it is the newness
of a sensation. But it is also certainly a skill that is learned,
perfected and constantly bears the test of reality.
Giancarlo Mecarelli began work as an illustrator and later as art
director in large advertising agencies such as McCann Erickson,
Masius, Young & Rubican and J.W.T. His introduction to
photography occurred within this environment, a creative hotbed
oriented towards communication and solidly anchored within the
marketplace. Why not try to create his own images, Mecarelli asked
himself. So, he opened his own photography studio, first in Rio in
Brazil, then in Barcelona, Spain and later in Milan.
Formal rigor, invention, implicit messages, meticulous
planning-these are the elements that have characterized his work
for the last twenty years, much of it done on commission, but with
other works created to develop specific themes almost as if
intuiting the future needs of his clients.
