Canadian Jonathan Luckhurst modestly calls himself an "up-and-coming photographer", but, in reality, at just 29 years of age, he has already been published in B&W Magazine and Silvershotz, has received two nominations in the 2008 Black and White Spider Awards, and that he was selected asa finalist for the 2008 Photolucida Critical Mass Book Awards. In November 2008 he took part in a collective show in honor of the legendary master of black-and-white, Ansel Adams. And this says it all. It is always a pleasure to see lovely works developed in a darkroom. Few photographers do it nowadays, and Luckhurst is one of them. The development and printing of negatives is a veritable rite, the essence of real photography. Today the life cycle of a photograph is shooting, looking at the shot, downloading it to the computer, editing and printing. Rolls of film and darkrooms are a totally different story. Making use of the romance of black-and-white nuance, Luckhurst each time captures the sensations of a fleeting instance or place in the hope of bringing them to life. Nothing in his photographs is constructed, nothing is planned.
