The exhibition, “Sguardi sull’Africa” (Views of Africa), offers an anthropological, historical and social interpretation of this great continent—the interpretation given it by the West through the various ways it has represented it over the years. Involved in this major initiative presenting 148 photographs are many institutions such as Slovenski Etnografski Muzej in Lubiana, the Musée dell’Elisée in Lausanne, the Atlas Gallery in London, the PaciArte Contemporary in Brescia, and numerous historic archives such as CRAF and international agencies.
The photographs cover a historical period ranging, basically, from around 1880 with those taken by the Royal Engineers in the land of the Zulu and those by Giacomo Savorgnan di Brazzà taken during the Congo expeditions of his brother Pietro, and continuing with South African photographer G.E.Bruton, the Zangaki brothers, Lidio Cipriani (1927) and Ernest Hemingway’s portraits taken in Kenya by Peter Buckley; also included works by Thomas Höpker, Chris Steele Perkins, Maurizio Frullani, Sebastião Salgado, Phil Borges, Nick Brandt and many others.
Remaining on the same theme, but shifting venue, is Spilimbergo Fotografia 2010, also organized by the CRAF, where special attention goes to Aida Muluneh (1974, Ethiopia), winner of the International Award of Photography.
